The Epiphany King's Cake Tradition

Each January 6th, millions of families celebrate El Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day / Epiphany), commemorating the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem. The culinary centerpiece of this feast is the monumental Rosca de Reyes.

Sacred Symbolism in Every Detail

At El Gallo Bakery, our holiday roscas are baked using centuries-old Mexican traditions:

  • The Oval Shape: Symbolizes the infinite circle of divine love, without beginning or end.
  • Candied Fruit Jewels: Strips of candied fruit (ate) in green, red, and yellow represent the gemstones adorning the royal crowns of the Magi.
  • The Hidden Infant: Small figurine charms of baby Jesus (El Niño Dios) are baked inside the loaf, symbolizing the Holy Family hiding the infant Christ from King Herod.

The Tamale Host Pact

Finding the figurine in your slice is considered a blessing—and an honor! Whoever discovers the charm becomes the godparent of the child and is responsible for hosting the family with hot tamales and champurrado on February 2nd for Día de la Candelaria.
