What Is Rosca de Reyes?
The Rosca de Reyes (King's Wreath or Epiphany Cake) is an oval-shaped Mexican sweet bread baked specifically for Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day / Epiphany) celebrated on January 6th. The bread symbolizes the royal crown worn by the biblical Magi on their journey to Bethlehem.
Symbolism & Traditional Ingredients
Each monumental Rosca handcrafted at El Gallo Bakery features rich, citrus-perfumed butter dough leavened slowly for maximum fragrance. The crown is decorated with:
- Candied Fruit Strips (Ate): Emerald green and ruby red fruit strips representing the jewels set in royal crowns.
- Sugar Crust Ribbons: Sweet vanilla paste ribbons similar to concha toppings, symbolizing purity and joy.
- Hidden Figurine Charms (El Niño Dios): Small heat-resistant infant figurines baked inside the dough, symbolizing the Holy Family hiding the Christ child from King Herod.
The Tamale Host Tradition
Tradition dictates that whoever cuts a slice containing the hidden infant figurine becomes the godparent of the child and is honor-bound to host the family with homemade tamales and champurrado on February 2nd (Día de la Candelaria).
